So, back in writing :)
Many things happened in between.
Horizon07 went well, after Rahul's talk teachers of the college came to us to know more about Fedora :) Lawgon's workshop also went well. You can find the pictures here. Also a small video of the event.

Fedora Core 6 also failed on Ria's motherboard, so I gave a V-day gift , a new Intel 865 motherboard and Fedora Core 6 installed :)

Update: the video is too bad, will ask someone else to edit that :(

librfid 0.1.0 build on Fedora

After last Saturday, when Harald announced librfid 0.1.0 release, today the rpm is ready in the Fedora build system. librfid is a Free Software RFID library. It implements the PCD (reader) side protocol stack of ISO 14443 A, ISO 14443 B, ISO 15693, Mifare Ultralight and Mifare Classic. Support for iCODE and other 13.56MHz based transponders is planned.
OpenPCD is the recommended reader with librfid. librfid team is happy to offer paid development services to add support for your reader, too.

Wrote my second OpenPCD application, now my KDE desktop can be locked-unlocked using my OpenPCD board.

Tarique asked for adding some more lines with this.
For this code again taking help from Harald's librfid-tool.c in the utils directory of the librfid source. The main idea is to show how OpenPCD can be used. First I was looking for a way to keep unlock my laptop as my OpenPCD card is near to the OpenPCD reader & as I(the card) move away from the reader it should get unlocked automatically,, which it turn produced my first application.
Last night found a simple way to do that with dcop.

dcop kdesktop KScreensaverIface quit

The first line will lock your KDE desktop & the second one will unlock it. Still don't understand makefiles well, tried to avoid any more dependencies in the code thus calling these two commands as need using system().

My first C code

Well, I can say that this is my first C code :)
Milosch gave me the idea to write a small application which can detect openpcd cards and unlock the computer. So, I started with easier target & now my openpcd board can login in any (username,password) based system(tested with different browsers still now). The code is in very early stage, and I put every thing manually(not dynamic at all).

Day two finished. A more eventful one. Milosch bought a basic electronics book for me so that I can understand the basics :)
Then we went to SP Road to buy the equipments. Again Milosch bought all of them for me.

Here is the set.

Then my first work. A single LED :P

At the end Milosch made a piezo speaker system for the openpcd board, and we made few changes to build a new firmware (main_piezo) which can make a 10sec noise at the speaker system.

Can you find the speaker in the above picture ? :P

openpcd hack..

So, the best thing this time in foss.in is the starting of my embedded work. Openpcd is a nice work from Milosch, Brita & Harald.
Yesterday from 4pm me & Milosch was trying to make my laptop configured properly so that I can start wokring on the openpcd board that Milosch presented me :) And it took 8 hours (with 2 hours for dinner) to fix it. Now it is a only 3 minute job.
So, here is the procedure:

First make sure that you do a modprobe usbserial.
Now first I am going to fix my laptop as the host:

Last Saturday in the bangpypers meet, anand introduced HarvestMan.

From the project page:
HarvestMan is a fully functional, multithreaded webcrawler cum offline-browser. It is highly customizable and supports as much as 55 plus options for controlling and customizing offline browsing. It is written entirely in the Python programming language.

It simply rocks. I remember in the college days I was looking something like this.
Now I have one and in python :)
Still now it is a command line tool, GUI is in TODO list. So, will start doing that. For me, PyQt is the best choice.
If any one is wondering, how a gr8 python modular code looks, he/she should look into HarvestMan.

gcc vs turboc

The war started between me & Ria. It was my worst fear and it came true today. We just started arguing over gcc & turboc. She was telling that turboc is better 'coz in the college turboc is the only choice. She fixed her mind on this.
The fight was like this..

Q: Why turboc is good?
A: Both clrscr() & getch() functions are there :)
Q: Why gcc is bad?
A: 'Coz other students in the college are not using it.

When she said "Windows is better than Linux", I just hung up. I don't know when I am going to call her back. :(

That's sure.
I don't know what?

But I did that.
Monday night was the most miserable night in my life. May be, due to that shock I did that.
I am not feeling well, too much stress for me.

Q: What I did?
Ans:
In the afternoon just called her mom, said a few general words, and then, simply told that "I want to marry your daughter".
Reply came in the usual way, she didn't want to think about it . So hope for the best in the future.

Q: What came next?
Ans:
Around 9.30 pm I got a call from her mom, I was afraid. She told, that they thought about me, and decided that there is no problem about the marriage :)
I was just jumping around the house. Uhh!! What a call!!
Now I am flying..............

Kphotobymail is a flickr up loader written in python using pyqt. Was looking for some tool to send the photos through mail to flickr, opening a new mail every time is a irritating job.
This is my first pyqt app. You can download it from here.
Still no documentation for it. Will do that in next week.
One thing, you can delete any row by double clicking on it.

My current work is to setup a KOHA server for HCL CMS. Test setup is done properly, now the data migration.
For the users it is going to be easy. I need to insert in borrowers table from our SAP database. Though no sample data is available for me, but it seems to be easy.

The records for the books are in opposite condition. Koha has the power to import MARC records. The current app is in Lotus Notes. I thought, I will at least get a CSV format data, from which MARC records will be created and at last will use Koha to import. Pymarc module is good to work with MARC in python.
But our people didn't create a database for the books good enough to create MARC records. They don't have ISBN !!!!

A day with Fedora

Came back from Durgapur. The event went good:
I reached Durgapur on 3rd April. That was a holiday in BCREC college, but my
dgplug colleagues were there to do the final work. We checked the banners,
seminar room etc. We also burned a few copies of FC5 DVD in night.

The next day started properly. There were four speakers, Me , Indranil
Dasgupta, Sayamindu Dasgupta & Soumyadip Modak. There were around 120
students.

First we played "Truth Happens", it took lot of attention.
The first speech was from Indranil named "All about Fdora".

The slides were made by Sankarshan & IDG.

It lasts around 2 hours. He first talked about FOSS, then stared how Fedora
project fits in. A few M$ lover asked why Linux?? and got perfect punch back
to them & the first half ended that way.
We distributed FC4 DVDs & tee as the reward of asking questions.

The second session started with my talk.
I was talking about different apps in FC5 & I opened them one by one as the slides goes on. But suddenly current was gone, hopefully it came back with 10 minutes. During that time we had lots of question about the applications in Fedora.

Third talk was from Sayam, he showed a bengali KDE in FC5. His talk was mainly about how to translate. Then Soumyadip showed some live translation example, he mainly came to talk about translation for Ubuntu. The last talk was again from Sayam, "Programming in Linux". That started with basic C programming to GTK programming.

The day ended with Soumya's vote of thanx.
In the next day we had a Install fest in the college lab. In the first half a
complete loadshading was there, so we started from the second half.
First I showed the installation process in a box. Then the students started installing in the boxes one after another.
Forget to tell you, that was my first text based installation, the boxes have
only 128MB ram.

At the end I had a very bad error.It came only for one box. The same CD/DVD works fine in other boxes.

Yesterday, Soumya (Current coordinator of dgplug, based in Durgapur) got his job on campus. I am really happy to hear that. Was waiting to hear that eagerly.
This boy, is the best junior I ever seen. He works hard, very hard. After I left Durgapur, all responsibilities of dgplug was on his head. And he did a wounderful job. Supporting Bijra school, is the best.

He was with me in Asansol Engineering College, NIT Durgapur for the hardware exhibitions, and we won 1st prize in both.

Somebody is taking over my mobile phone

I have a Nokia 7710 with BSNL postpaid connection.
For the last few months I am having a problem with it, sometimes it stops ringing, or vibrating, in the same time it does not log anything. I have to open the battary and restart it to work.
Now the problem goes more, it is automatically trying to download someting through SIM services(I couldn't find out this feature). It gives an error while downloading, if I press OK it goes out. I also got a SMS from 8543(accidentally I delete that) saying "Please switch off and switch on your mobile phone" !!!!!!
Just saw a incoming call for a second and the phone restarted. No log for that call !!!!!
Can somebody help me to figure out whats going on ??

X & my dad

Around 2pm, my dad called me, and said that X is not coming at home PC. I asked him what it is showing?
He told me a full screen of reporting bug stuff (he knows only start & shutdown & simple clicking). I replied, sorry I can't say anything from here(I don't know anything about that , how can I say??).
But after half an hour he replied that X is ok now.
How he did that? & what actually happened? God knows!!

That's what Phaneesh told me, when I asked him about the Linux boxes in the office internet kiosks. According to my observation, people who are not using those Linux boxes either don't know how to chat on that or never saw Linux working before :).
But, if you see the others who generally comes in to the kiosks and go directly to those Linux boxes, you will be surprised that most of them are using Linux only for the browsing time.
It will take time.. people don't want to change. But they will see how others are gaining & they will come in.

We had a meet to plan a global gplv3 meet around June-July. That meet will be mainly for the decision makers , law students & lawyers. We talked around 1 hour in the park.
A M company s*y (a girl with a MSDN T-shirt) was there in the same time.
We are going to have another meet within two weeks to clear the gpl idea among ourselves first.

Learning C from 2nd Sem.. Thought can explain the basics.. But when I tried to explain a very basic code to the first years in college, I was clean bowled.
The code:

According to my knowledge it should give 5 6 6.
But it gave 5 6 5.. Why? I don't know... today in office, me,naresh & Arvind tried to figure out what is happening..
It is giving 5 6 6 up to GCC 4.0.0 version (as informed by Monuda), but in GCC 4.0.2 .. we can't explain the result..

After many days, I saw a net connection(in working condition).
Now in university (WBUT). Tomorrow I will be back in Bangalore. Last two weeks were tough, tough enough to became sick.
Still having cold.
Got tremendous experience in this tour. I spend only about 40 hours at home in last two weeks.(Mom is really angry about it).

Toshiba satellite A80 & sk98lin

Yesterday got a Toshiba satellite A80 from company. Was very happy, about that. So, started installing Fedora Core 4 into it. Installed perfectly.... original masti starts then...

1. No Ethernet card showing....
2. No sound

The Ethernet card is from Marvell, 88E8036 model
So downloaded sk98lin.
I can't install it for the first time, tried to generate a patch. Rebuild the whole kernel.. Idea didn't work. Tried whole night..... In the morning installed FC4 again, this timte with a direct driver installation, asked sankarshan sir quite a few times, asked srini too. Then went to bindu, at least with the help from all of them it started working.

Still there was no sound.... Called Sankarshan sir again & again & again.
alsaunmute command works... but every time I reboot , I have to give the command again....

At last.. it is working .. Currently busy to upgrade with yum...

Finally, I changed my PC to a Linux box in the office. Installed lotus notes(windows version) through wine, configured Kmail for the office mail id. Now I don't need to use that windows box ever(previous owner of this seat made it slowest PC in the world).
No work just like other days. Really loosing my temperament while seating in a chair.

The Ulsoor CD shop will change their configuration. They are going for some better one.
Last day, I asked Murali for leave in Jan, he agreed. Need to talk with different schools in Durgapur. Looking for a better response from the first year juniors from the college. Currently their exam is going on.

Today, I installed Linux in a few of office Internet kiosk pcs. People started using it.
There I got two big questions...

1. Can you also browse in Linux?
The man, who asked me this is a senior person.

Now, another guy was using the firefox for quite a while in the 2nd floor Internet kiosk. When, he stood up, I sat on his chair and he suddenly looked back and asked me "Which operating system that was??"...
I replied "Linux!!"
What u want to say about that??

HCL Capital Market Services (My Company)........... the beginning

I work in HCL Capital Market Services, work in a dept, where I have a chance to do some R&D type of works(only if they are in FOSS), though not much coding (means not so fun). But still really enjoying my job. I am also looking the various entry points for FOSS in our organization.

We have two internet kiosks in the office, having only windows. But I convinced my people to put doors in some of them & give a try. Someone in the office was telling that still LINUX is tough to handle as a Desktop OS. I asked him when did he last time see a LINUX BOX!!!!!!
Answer: "two years ago".. after that he only saw terminal clients, not the GUI.

We can clearly understand that we need more coverage to the end users..............................

Monday I will help them in HCl CMS to put the DOORS :)

Office Work & simple life

Everything is fine. Ayesha is checking the TikiWiki installation, she want some changes in look. Same is the condition of DSpace (YAP here we call it). Don't know when I will put it on the server. I already asked Ranga if he can provide me a laptop. He said to remind him again on Monday.

Python looks really cool. A beautiful language, tremendous power within. Today most of the time, I read from the PDF files, and wrote some cool scripts. Don't think it will take much time to be in form in it.

Talked about Saheli with Murli today. He told it will be done, (that means there is a chance of SAHELI IN BLORE :) )

Still in a mood of FOSS.IN, not out of it yet. Checked the photos from the site.

FOSS.IN 2005

My whole student life, I waited to be the part of such a event like FOSS.IN 2005. Now the dream come true.. and next level is ready to reach.
For the last couple of months, waiting for this event, and now waiting for the next year's :)

Got a chance to inaugurate the event.. and get into it .
In the opening ceremony, Atul's speech was wonderful, it seems that Rabindranath Tagore wrote those lines for the FOSS community from the beginning. As Alan Cox told in his last slide(which is the first talk of the event) that it is the beginning for some people who start their journey in FOSS.

Then came Danese Cooper.I heard about her, saw the pictures, just like other FOSS GOD & GODDESSES. Her speech was extremely energetic & full of motivation. People got inner urge to reach some destination, but when you listen a speech like that, your engine will fire like a rocket. She told to throw ourselves in front of rail, which I do always. May be it seems very painful (some time it is), but the result will be the best.

Then started to look around all the ground. This is first time I met Indranil Dasgupta. The names I watched in different pages, lists, got a chance to meet those people face to face. What a experience!!!
I met Till in the same morning, he is such a beautiful person
In the night, went out with Indranil da, took some print outs & came back home after midnight.

Next day, started with Jonathan Corbet's talk "A Linux Kernel Roadmap". It gave a clear idea what is going on there.

Then quickly moved into ballroom hall. The rest of the morning session, I was there. As Danese started asking about different problems & answers about "Women in FOSS", people gave some real input.
(By the way, she took great note of those in her laptop & in paper at the time of Sulamita's talk)
Sulamita gave her first talk in English. Another good talk. Wish to send these slides to our junis in dgplug. We have more active girls in our group than boys. That session surely going to help us to face the real world problems. Talked with Zaheda, and she said that she will try to help us in Durgapur to spread FOSS in schools.

In the next half of the day, I participated in Python BOF. I want to write program for my nokia 7710 myself. Sirtaj ji told me python may be a better way to do that. I want to thank Mr. Swaroop C H for his wonderful book on Python. (just received a sms from Praveen that foss education meet is on saturday in PESIT)

Third day started with Andrew Cowie's talk.

The next was Till's KOLAB. It can be a very good replacement in our company where we use the M company's system (so sad!!!). As Danese told, I already stared to put the replacement funda to manager's brain(though it is a corporate decision).
After finishing both of his talk on KOLAB & Kontact, Till spent a lot of time behind me. I was pinging him with lots of questions , and he gave the answers coolly. He is such a nice person. I joined the Kolab team, will hack the web client. Till asked Atul, to arrange a kolab server for KDE.IN in which I can do my work too.

Danese took yet another breaking workshop on "How to gave a Foss presentation". Here got a chance to learn about different common mistakes we made.

Here I gave a lighting talk on "How to ask 4 days leave from your manager for FOSS". People really laughed at that time. After finishing, Danese's review gave some more charge in my battery.

Last day was again full of excitement. I gave my talk and got very useful feedbacks. Attended Kolab BOF (and missed KDE.IN BOF later) .
Later in the night, did a small joke with Alan, Joy & Till asked me to go to Alan and ask him to take my picture. I did that!!!
And Alan took a nice picture of mine.
